Three Books About Lawyers Reviewed

I came across this old article about three books about lawyers. It was written back in 1975. Then, maybe more than now, the law and civil rights were making headlines together.

The image of lawyers hasn’t improved much since Elizabethan times when Shakespeare wrote, “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.”

But now lawyers are beginning to take the stand in their own defense. The case of Gerald M. Stern not only proves that lawyers can be on the side of justice, but that even partners in powerful law firms can protect the powerless.

n 1972 in the Appalachian Valley of Buffalo Creek, a dam burst, deluging 16 mining communities with more than 150 tons of water, oil and sludge. The communities were literally swept away. One hundred and twenty-five people lost their lives, hundreds more lost their homes, possessions and families.

Criminal Lawyer Plea Bargain Scenario

Scene:  A Criminal Lawyer who is particularly good,and a potential clent who’s been charged with felony robbery. The odds are that the client has been arrested before. And the odds are that said client did serve time in the penitentiary for the previous crime and that he or she won’t serve time for this one.

The first thing your lawyer will do is ask for a continuance, a delay in the case. He will ask for a continuance not once or twice or even three times but as many times as he can possibly get away with. He isn’t asking for a delay in order to better prepare your case. He’s hoping that witnesses may move away or their memories will fade or they will just lose patience and not show up in court.

Your lawyer can also count on the prosecutor asking for a certain number of continuances also because he’s overworked, understaffed and sometimes, ill-prepared to go to trial.
